History Behind WeeHaven

WeeHaven was founded in 1949 by Mrs C. Fay DeHaven. Mrs Dehaven operated the Center at 2081 Willowgrove in the present home of Mrs. Mary Kingdom, who was part of our staff for over 17 years. The Center was known back then as WeeFolks. WeeHaven moved to the present address in 1959.

Mrs. Sarah Benson worked as a Program Director for Mrs. DeHaven in Head Start. She and her husband, Robert bought the Center in 1969 and moved into the second floor, where they lived with their two boys, Eric and Tony, until the Center expanded into the area in 1984.

Mrs. DeHaven had dreams of what she wanted WeeHaven to be. Many of her ideas have been realized over the years. including 3 expansions. A small expansion in 1971 and the multi-purpose room in 1977. Today what you see at WeeHaven is a result of the 27 years of the Labor of Love and dedication to children by the Benson's and Mrs. DeHaven.

In January of 1996, WeeHaven was purchased by Sue and Greg Engler. At the time of the sale, Sue and Greg were parents of two children who had attended WeeHaven for 5 years. It was their objective to Keep the WeeHaven tradition going by continuing to provide a Center with a warm, loving, family atmosphere, where children can learn. Sue is a nurse by education and is now the director of the Center.

As we enjoy another year at WeeHaven we thank God for all the children, parents and staff who are here now, as well as the thousands who have passed through our doors over the past 57 years.
